Dear Moderator

Welcome to my AS Media Studies blog. I have created a college magazine as a preliminary task, and created a music magazine for my main task.

My research and planning began September 2011
My magazine production began January 2012
I then did my evaluation in March 2012

My completed magazine is below

I hope you enjoy reading this.

Thank you.

Research and Planning: what I did today

I modified my front cover and took a couple of pictures to test out whether I can edit a wall's colour.

Research and Planning: what I've done so far, Music magazine

Here are the basic outlines for my magazine, I am still yet to add images or text regarding the features within the magazine. I will continue developing these.

Research and Planning: My magazine so far

Research and Planning: Plan for the week

Today I:
  • Took model test shots
  • Began creating my magazine cover
I also plan to:
  • Continue in the production of my magazine, with the basics of the contents page

Research and Planning: Model Test Shots

This model could be used within my magazine. The hair is of an unusual colour, and the dress sense is of predominantly dark colours, with just one that stands out; red. My genre research tells me that she wouldn't be able to be the main focus of my magazine, yet she could be featured as an extra.

This person could not be featured in my magazine, the dress sense is not well styled to a rock magazine.

This model would work very well on my magazine front cover, as his style is very moody looking, which would be very impressive on a magazine cover, he is showing here that he can pose well for pictures too, and his features all fit the criteria for a rock-star image.

This model would not be able to be used. She i too innocent looking, and her style is of a different kind to rock musicians.

This model's image is not right for a rock magazine either, she styles herself differently to how the rock scene looks.

This model would work very well within my magazine. The way she is dressed here would not work, however if she were to dress in rock clothes, for example band merchandise, then she would fit in very well with my magazine. She could not feature prominently on the front cover however, as genre research tells me this would usually be a male.

Research and Planning: Genre Research

Here are examples of some of the colours linked with specific bands' merchandise.
My feedback told me that band merchandise should be featured within my magazine, so looking at these images suggests black and white should be prominent colours, with other colours being on the front of the hoodies perhaps, as is best illustrated by the All Time Low hoodie.

Research and Planning: Double Page Spread Examples

This example will probably be the most similar to mine in relation to content, it is about a band that few people will have heard of. However, the two pages look very divided, which is something I don't intend to do, in my magazine the two pages will both be dedicated to one band. Also, this is very focused on the band as a whole, my article will have a focus on multiple band members.

This article is of a higher quality than the first and is far more thorough, giving an in depth article all about Matt Bellamy. I like the thoroughness and hope to achieve that myself, however I intend to focus on multiple individuals, rather than just the lead singer of the band I feature. Also, the layout has a full page devoted to an image, I do not intend to do this either.

This example is again of just one band member, which is thorough, which I like, yet I do not want to repeat the thoroughness within just one band member, I hope to have different parts of the pages devoted to different band members. The article header is taken from an interview, I haven't yet decided if I will repeat this idea, but I am considering it after seeing how well it has worked here.

Research and Planning: Plan for the week

This week I intend to:
  • Create a location recce over the weekend
  • Find a series of double page spread examples similar to the one I intend to create
  • Create an extra genre post

Research and Planning: Location recce: St John Fisher cage sports complex

I am choosing this location because the floodlights will add a good effect behind my artists. It will allow me to take low angle shots with the lighting coming from behind my models, adding an odd, and a dark effect to the images, which will suit a rock magazine, which my research has shown generally features lots of dark colour. My images will be shot here at night.

Research and Planning: Genre Research

Here are examples of the front covers of rock magazines.

As I can see here on each of these front covers is that every single artist is facing the camera, meaning that this must be a necessity within my magazine.
I also see that most artists wear black, however in larger groups there is sometimes one individual wearing a different colour in order to stand out.
I noticed that black and white fonts are frequently used, often on top of the other colour, which is being used in the background in many of these images. I will repeat this concept on my magazine front cover.
All of these covers also have a list of bands featured inside. Even though my magazine is for new artists, I intend to repeat this idea within my magazine.

Research and Planning: Plan for the week

This week I plan to:
  • Create a location recce for my first location
  • Create a risk assessment for this location
  • Add another genre post about rock music

Research and Planning:Drafts for music magazine with audience research.

Research and Planning: Test shots with SLR cameras

The inside picture with the grey background has a flash on, which enhances the image indoors. This enlightens Holly's facial expressions, making them clearer, showing the pose that she has. It is zoomed to be a medium close up. The zoom is so clear, even the material the jumper is made out of can be seen.

This image didn't need a flash, so was taken with a distorted background, focusing on Holly and the balcony. It makes the design of the balcony very clear, as well as Holly's expression, whereas the ceiling is less clear, since I used the focusing tool.
Outside, a flash is not needed as the natural light is already bright enough. The zoom and focus can still be altered however, in order to see the two in more detail.
The camera can be zoomed and re-focused for pictures from different distances, and shot types. The medium close ups are easy to modify, and from different distances, as this shows. I took the camera further back, and zoomed further in order to show more of the background, in this case the white doors.

The colour within these photographs are all very clear, with a very strong distinction between each colour, even where Holly and Karishma's arms overlap in the image, the shadow doesn't blur the distinction between each of their arms, as it might with other cameras. The definition of each feature within the photos is much clearer than within my college magazine photos.

Research and planning: publication plan

Research and Planning: Genre Research

Typical artists of the rock genre are:
  • The Blackout
  • Lostprophets
  • Framing Hanley
  • The Used
  • Funeral For A Friend
  • We Are The Ocean
  • Escape The Fate
The look the majority of the models have is that they usually have long hair, wear dark clothes, and frequently other bands' merchandise.

The mise en scene associated with this genre are miserable facial expressions, fatigued models, often looking a little sweaty. There are often medium long shots of groups as well, whose bodies tend to overlap in the shot, leaving no space between them.

Costumes and outfits worn are typically dull coloured, with grey black and white frequently featured, as well as an extra colour to stand out, like red, green or blue.

Research and Planning: Plan for the week

This week I intend to:
    • Upload my drafts which take audience feedback into consideration
    • Search for my first model
    • Produce a post on my blog about the Rock genre and the typical artists featured within this genre
    • Complete a publication Plan
    • Get to grips with the SLR cameras
